What is compounding?

Compounding is the art and science of preparing customised medicines. It is a specialised service that only a limited number of pharmacies in Australia provide.

At Karrinyup St Luke Pharmacy, we create a wide range of dosage forms. These include capsules, creams, ointments, gels, lotions, paints, suspensions, sublingual troches, nasal sprays, ear drops, suppositories, and vaginal pessaries. For veterinary patients, we also prepare medicines as capsules, suspensions, chews, and transdermal gels.

We use state-of-the-art compounding machines and equipment to deliver consistent, effective, and high-quality preparations. Our ingredients are sourced from all major Australian compounding suppliers. This gives us access to a broad range of high-quality chemicals, instead of being limited to one supplier’s range.

Why do need compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is an important part of modern healthcare. It allows pharmacists to prepare customised medicines that meet individual needs when standard, commercially available options are not suitable.

Compounding provides solutions such as:

  • Paediatric medicines in suspensions or suppositories for children who cannot swallow tablets.
  • Allergen-free formulations without ingredients like gluten, lactose, or dyes.
  • Access to discontinued or out-of-stock medicines, helping patients continue their treatment without interruption.
  • Alternative dosage forms or strengths not available commercially.
  • Novel therapies that are not supplied on the Australian market.
