Frequently Asked Questions About Compounding
Which prescriptions can be compounded at St Mary Pharmacy?
We specialise in non-sterile, complex compounding, offering a wide range of pharmaceutical dosage forms tailored to each patient\’s needs. For human patients, we prepare:
- Capsules
- Creams, ointments, gels, lotions, and paints
- Suspensions
- Sublingual troches
- Nasal sprays and ear drops
- Suppositories and vaginal pessaries
For veterinary patients, we compound:
- Capsules and suspensions
- Flavoured chews
- Transdermal gels
Is it possible to compound a tablet-only medication into a liquid suspension suitable for children?
Absolutely. We work closely with prescribers to ensure each medication is compounded to the correct dose. Depending on the medication, it can be prepared as a suspension, syrup, or elixir for easier administration.
For example, many ADHD medications are not available in oral liquid form for paediatric patients — so we regularly compound them into custom oral liquid preparations to meet this need.
If I am allergic to an ingredient in a commercially available tablet, can St Mary Pharmacy prepare capsules containing the same medicine without that additive?
Yes! We can create customised preparations to accommodate allergies or intolerances to excipients and common pharmaceutical additives such as gluten, lactose, dyes, preservatives, or starch.
For patients who cannot consume gelatin, whether due to intolerance or religious reasons, we can make capsules using vegetable-based shells instead.
The same level of care applies to topical preparations. We frequently formulate creams, gels, and ointments without irritants, preservatives, or allergens, ensuring they’re as gentle and well-tolerated as possible.
How do I know the cost of my medications? Are compounded medications subsidized by PBS or Private health insurance?
Compounded medicines are generally supplied as private prescriptions. We will provide you with a signed pharmacy receipt so you can claim through your private health insurance, workers’ compensation, or workplace where applicable.
The cost of a compounded preparation can vary and is influenced by multiple factors, including:
Cost of the active ingredient(s)
Cost of other excipients or base ingredients
Labour and preparation time
Specialised equipment used
Hazardous classification of ingredients
Required PPE (personal protective equipment)
Consumables used in the process
PBS does not usually cover compounded medications unless the preparation is listed as a “Standard Formula Preparation” on the PBS website.
